Friends

my friends are an empty promise
thoughts and energy of endless loss
I ought to learn each time how it costs
to be true and honest with them

they take for granted my attention
I'm a ticking time bomb of tolerance
the explosion of unspoken tension
could erode us without a mention

but as always I fold, refusing to be cold
intervention as best course for prevention
I implement discretion and turn up my frown
silently knowing the stakes of our friendship
